Summary:
1. Your stream structure depends on how often certain content needs to be communicated to a certain target group
2. Typical streams are streams for the whole company, for individual locations, departments, topics or processes
3. Some streams are more formal, others more informal
4. In a stream there should be a post every day, or at least several times a week
5. We recommend starting small with a few streams and adding more over time as the content develops.
6. When defining your stream structure, you can use the "Stream Structure" tab of the "Templates" document.
Stream Structure
There is no universal recipe for the ideal stream structure. Defining your ideal stream structure can be complicated, so we are sharing some tips and tools to help you in this process.
When it comes to the number of Streams, it is recommended to take a ‘less is more’ approach to start. It is always easier to add an additional stream instead of removing one. Of course, bigger companies typically have more streams than smaller ones. But this does not mean that every employee needs to see all streams. To not make it overwhelming at the beginning, we recommend that an employee can see two to four streams.
Typical streams are based around the following topics:
- Company Stream (visible for all employees)
- Location Streams (visible for employees at a specific location)
- Department Streams (visible for employees at a specific department)
- Topic Stream (visible for employees dealing with this specific topic)
- Stream for specific Process (visible for employees dealing with this specific process)
- Social Stream / (Marketplace) (visible for all employees)
Some streams are more formal, others are more informal. For formal streams which are visible to everybody, it can make sense to limit the permission so that only certain people can post in the stream. That said, we recommend giving everybody the right to post to start, because we see that when you exemplify the correct usage of a stream at the beginning, the users will adapt accordingly and it will create a truly engaging and collaborative space.
In the document Templates on the sheet “Solutions Brainstorm”, filter by the column “Post (Stream)”, “Tag 1”, “Tag 2” and “Tag 3”. Check out how many ideas you have for every tag, and then analyze with the “Frequency” column how frequent these posts will be posted.
When there are a lot of ideas with the same tag, and the frequency often is daily, weekly or biweekly, then it probably makes sense to create a separate stream for that tag. When there are just a few ideas for a specific tag, and/or the frequency is rather low, then it makes sense to create a highlighted label for this tag in a more general stream, and publish the post there.
Generally we recommend that for every stream which you create, there should be a new post every day, or at least a couple of posts per week. This ensures that Beekeeper is always fresh when your employees login.
For the definition of your stream structure you can use the tab "Stream Structure" in the document Templates.
